Own a wearable piece of history in this war time era little black dress!
This dress was made during the 1930s from Maisonette Frocks, by Ward Stilson and Anderson Industries. The tag reads a size 20.5, but it would best fit modern US women’s sizes 10-12. Please see measurements below to guarantee fit.
The fabric is made of a non-stretch, lightweight rayon crepe (due to the shortage of silk during war time, rayon became a popular fabric used in apparel.) The fabric is slightly sheer and would usually be worn with a slip underneath.
The fabric was cut on the bias, giving this dress a very flattering drape on the human form. (This dress was photographed on a size 4 mannequin, and pinned to display the silhouette as accurately as possible.)
The dress closes up the front bodice with three black buttons. There is also a ten inch long metal zipper hidden within the left side seam to make it easier to slip on and off.
The dress has some very pretty design details, such as inverted box pleats on the front skirt, and a sheer eyelet trim panel that runs down the front of the bodice. This dress is a timeless style that transitions well from day to evening. It is totally wearable for daily life, or could make an excellent costume piece for theater or film!
Please note that that there is a small hole that has been repaired/patched at the back shoulder (see close up photo). There is also a small lighter colored spot just above the pleats on the front skirt that I am confident would come out with a little TLC or trip to the dry cleaners. The spot is not very noticeable when the dress is being worn.
Over all, this rare garment is in very good vintage condition, and it was stored in a smoke-free environment.
